Making the Most of your 1:1s with
your Manager

SEPTEMBER 28, 2023
10:45am-11:30am ET

Your 1:1 meeting with your manager - Is it scary? Is it fulfilling? How can you make the most of that precious time you have with your manager? Your 1:1s should be where you talk about your career growth, your frustrations, your wins, and your struggles. However, most 1:1s.

She has been building and leading diverse, inclusive, and ambitious teams for over 4 years now. Software Engineer Intern

What advice do you have for future interns?

Be confident in “we’ll figure this out.” This encouraged me to dive deeper into challenges every time. And I learned that even knowing what doesn't work contributes to moving forward.

Program Analysis Intern

How did your manager help you grow?

My manager always tries to include me in different activities that aren't just programming, like making me give a tech talk in front of the entire engineering department, managing a new release, responding to members in the community slack, and inviting me in meetings, even those that I don't have to be in but just to observe senior engineers and how they schedule priorities and projects.

What was your favorite part about the internship?

I was fortunate to work with an amazing team and a manager who not only kept me on track but also provided the best mentorship for me to grow and learn as much as possible. Not only that, but Semgrep offered a wealth of opportunities, especially in the startup world!

How we work

Great culture is not accidental; let’s create a company that will be a great place to be from.

We look for upside, asking "What can go right?" rather than “What can go wrong?”. We question everything and relentlessly look for the big opportunities to serve our users, impact our mission, and improve ourselves.

interns 1

We prefer to move quickly and make frequent contact with reality, which fuels our rapid learning. We are clever in our down-scoping and find the most direct path to answer the crux of any idea.

team in front of redwood trees

We improve and evolve everyday, questioning our assumptions and processes to find what no longer serve us. We expect each other to improve without permission.

Semgrep Supply Chain launch team

Our users decide the value of our work. Instead of theorizing, we immerse ourselves in our user’s daily lives. Only after our work has been judged by our users then we may judge it.

Semgrep Team at WiCyS conference

We want our ideas to be challenged and believe in passionate, productive discussion and debate around ideas, without resorting to personal attacks or holding grudges. This healthy conflict leads us to better decisions.
